THE BONELESS GUIDES
What is a boneless couch?
A plain-language guide to foam sofas, frameless construction and the labels that can cause confusion.
What “boneless” describes
The usual idea is a soft, frame-free sofa. Yet shopping categories and editorial roundups sometimes include products with springs or a supporting frame. Read the construction details if a fully frameless design is important to you.
Cloud, modular and compressed mean different things
Cloud describes a style or intended feel. Modular describes an arrangement of pieces. Compressed describes packaging. None of these labels, by itself, proves that a sofa is boneless.
A floor couch sits low; a bean bag uses a different seating format; a futon describes another sofa-and-bed tradition. They may overlap in use without being interchangeable products.
What to check in a listing
- Is there a rigid internal frame or a spring layer?
- What foam types are used in the seat and back?
- Which parts are separate, and how do they connect?
- What are the expanded seat height and usable depth?
- How long should the exact model recover after unpacking?
Is it always memory foam?
Do not assume that every foam layer is memory foam. A listing may describe a comfort layer without clearly describing the support underneath. Ask for the complete construction if the material is a deciding factor.

Manufacturer pages describe products; they are not independent tests. Check the current instructions for your exact model.
