LAYOUT GUIDE

L-shaped boneless couches

A chaise adds room to stretch out. Its side and depth decide whether the layout works.

An L-shaped boneless couch combines a main seating run with a longer return or chaise. Check whether left and right are described from the front or while seated.

Pick the side with a floor plan

Place the chaise where it will not interrupt the most-used route through the room. Mark the full return on the floor and include the space needed to get past it. A photograph can make a chaise look much shorter than it is.

If a listing calls the chaise reversible, look for instructions showing the actual change. Do not assume an L-shaped sofa can be rearranged simply because it arrives in two pieces.

Compare usable space

Overall width includes arms and gaps. Check the actual seat width if several people will use the sofa together. For the chaise, compare usable lounge length rather than outside depth alone.

  • Main run width and total return depth.
  • Left, right or genuinely reversible chaise.
  • Seat height after expansion.
  • Backrest height relative to the seat.
  • Connections between the chaise and the main sofa.

For a small living room

A chaise can replace a separate footstool, but its permanent footprint may limit flexibility. Compare an L shape with a smaller straight sofa and a movable ottoman before choosing.
