LAYOUT GUIDE

Modular boneless sectional couches

Understand the difference between a sectional layout and truly reconfigurable seating.

A sectional describes a sofa made in sections. Modular seating should let you use or rearrange those sections in the combinations the manufacturer allows. Check the actual connections before assuming every arrangement will work.

Plan for more than one arrangement

Draw the configuration you need now, then a second arrangement you might want after a move. Identify which pieces have arms, which have backs, and which are only ottomans. A product with a fixed chaise is not automatically reversible.

Independent modules can make a large couch easier to position. They can also require a suitable connection system, especially on smooth flooring. Ask how sections are held together.

Ask these questions before ordering

  • Can the chaise go on either side?
  • Are connectors supplied, and which sides connect?
  • Can extra modules be bought separately?
  • Do all seating pieces have usable backs?
  • Are dimensions listed for each piece as well as the full arrangement?

Modular or sectional: do you need both?

If the room layout is unlikely to change, a sectional with a fixed arrangement may be enough. If flexibility is the reason you are buying, make the permitted configurations a deciding factor rather than relying on the word modular.
