THE BONELESS GUIDES
Couch in a box: what to know before opening it
A step-by-step guide to room preparation, safe unboxing, foam recovery and protecting your return options.
Before you break the seal
Confirm the model, configuration, color and number of packages against your order. Photograph shipping labels and any torn, wet or crushed areas before opening. If the packaging or product appears seriously damaged, contact the seller before continuing.
Read both the setup instructions and the return policy. The key question is not only whether returns are allowed, but how an expanded sofa must be packaged and transported. Opening first and checking later can turn a manageable return into a difficult one.
Move the box to the final room first
Compressed furniture can expand dramatically and may be much harder to carry afterward. Measure the unopened package through doors, stair turns and elevators, then place it as close as practical to the final setup area.
Clear the entire published footprint plus working room around it. Protect the floor if the instructions permit, remove sharp objects and keep children and pets outside the work area. Arrange help for any package or module you cannot safely handle alone.
Open it without damaging the couch
Follow the manufacturer’s opening sequence. Use extra care with cutting tools: keep blades shallow and directed away from fabric, seams and foam. Do not pull against upholstery to free a tight layer of plastic.
Vacuum packaging and plastic wrapping should be controlled as they release. Dispose of or secure loose plastic promptly and keep it away from children and pets. Retain labels, instructions and any packaging the return policy specifically requires.
What happens after unboxing
Compressed foam begins recovering when the seal is released. Separate and orient pieces only as the instructions direct, then give them the stated recovery time in a suitable indoor environment. Creases and uneven areas immediately after opening do not by themselves establish a defect.
Do not borrow a steam, heat or “fluffing” method from an unrelated social video. Heat, forceful bending or early heavy use may be unsuitable for your fabric or foam. Use only methods authorized for the exact model.
How long should expansion take?
There is no single expansion time for every couch in a box. Packaging duration, foam construction, room conditions and the manufacturer’s process can differ. The checked OVIOS 96-inch sectional says full expansion can take up to 72 hours; another model may specify something else.
Record the date and time you opened the couch. Avoid judging its final seat height or shape before the published recovery window ends, but do not let a reporting or return deadline expire while waiting.
Before sitting, connecting or styling
Check whether the instructions permit use during recovery. When the pieces are ready, confirm their orientation before attaching any supplied connectors. A chaise or corner can look interchangeable while using a specific approved position.
Wait to judge measurements and fit until the model’s recovery period has passed. Then compare the couch with the published dimensions using the same measuring points described by the seller.
If it stays flat, uneven or creased
After the stated recovery period, take well-lit photographs from several angles and record relevant measurements. Contact the seller with the order number, model, unpacking time and a concise description of what has not recovered.
Ask for written next steps before applying unapproved heat, steam, adhesives or modifications. If a return may be needed, request packaging and pickup instructions immediately instead of assuming the original carton can hold the expanded foam.
